As a new group of Lower Sixth students prepares to begin Carmel College’s highly respected MDV (Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science) Programme, the college is taking a moment to look back at a video recorded earlier this year featuring students who were then preparing for university.

Those same students have now successfully progressed into competitive MDV courses, offering an inspiring reminder of where this High Achievers+ pathway can lead.

In the video, we caught up with four of the many dedicated Carmel students who were fully engaged in the MDV experience. Since then, each has taken the next step in their academic journey:

  • Grace Tresnan is studying Dentistry at the University of Liverpool.
  • Salome Nkemachor has progressed into Veterinary Science at the University of Liverpool.
  • Joel Barnett is now studying Medicine at the University of Leicester.
  • Adem Oskan has begun Medicine at the University of Manchester.

Their progression serves as an encouraging example to this year’s new MDV cohort as they begin their weekly sessions and start preparing for future applications.

What Does the MDV Programme Include?

Carmel College’s MDV Programme provides specialised preparation for students aspiring to study medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine. Through weekly sessions and targeted workshops, students build the skills and experience needed to make competitive applications. The programme includes:

  • Understanding the job roles, exploring what it means to work in medicine, dentistry or veterinary practice.
  • Talks from doctors, dentists and veterinarians, delivered both online and in person.
  • Support in securing relevant work experience.
  • Ethics lectures, debates and presentations, encouraging students to explore real-world dilemmas.
  • Problem Based Learning (PBL) to develop critical thinking, mirroring techniques used in many university courses.
  • Entrance exam revision sessions, helping students prepare for tests such as UCAT and BMAT (where applicable).
  • Personal statement workshops, guiding students to write effective and reflective applications.
  • Interview practice workshops, including mock interviews and preparation for MMIs.

As the next MDV cohort begins their journey, Carmel College wishes them every success and looks forward to supporting them through the challenging and exciting process ahead.
