Carmel College was delighted to welcome back former student Nicola Hamlin for an engaging and inspiring Inspire Me talk, giving students an insight into the relationship between art, psychology and mental health and wellbeing.
During her visit, Nicola shared her journey since leaving Carmel, reflecting on her career experiences and exploring how art can be used as a powerful tool to support mental health and emotional wellbeing.
Students were introduced to psychodynamic theory, which explores how past experiences, relationships and unconscious thoughts can influence our feelings and behaviour in the present. Nicola explained how these influences can sometimes be expressed through drawing and other forms of creative expression, highlighting the value of art as a means of understanding and communicating emotions.
The session provided students with an opportunity to explore the connection between creativity and psychology, while gaining a greater understanding of how artistic approaches can contribute to supporting mental health and wellbeing.
Nicola’s visit also offered valuable insight into the diverse career pathways available beyond college, demonstrating how personal interests and academic knowledge can lead to rewarding professional opportunities.
Carmel College would like to thank Nicola for returning to share her knowledge, experiences and passion with current students. Her talk was an excellent example of how former students can inspire the next generation, encouraging them to explore new ideas, consider different career possibilities and recognise the positive impact their skills and interests can have on others.
