Former De La Salle and Carmel College student, Tom Critchley, recently completed a valuable work experience placement at the Westminster office of MP David Baines (Carmel College Alumni), gaining first-hand insight into parliamentary life.
During his time in Westminster, Tom shadowed David Baines and his Senior Parliamentary Assistant, Anthony Broxton. His experience included observing Select Committees, attending working groups, and sitting in on meetings with external stakeholders. These opportunities provided Thomas with a detailed understanding of the day-to-day responsibilities of an MP and their team.
Anthony Broxton also gave Tom an in-depth look at the role of a Parliamentary Assistant, highlighting the vital behind-the-scenes work involved in supporting an MP. This included arranging meetings, responding to correspondence from constituents, drafting social media posts, and ensuring David Baines was fully supported in carrying out his parliamentary duties.
One of the highlights of the placement for Tom was the opportunity to watch Prime Minister’s Questions, as well as spending time directly with David Baines and Anthony Broxton. Reflecting on the experience, Tom said this “face-to-face insight into the work that goes into governing the country from Westminster” was invaluable.
Since leaving Carmel College, Tom has gone on to study History and Politics at City, St George’s University of London, where he is currently in his second year. He has expressed aspirations to pursue a future career in politics or governance.
The work experience proved particularly influential in shaping Tom’s future plans, as it introduced him to a range of parliamentary roles he had not previously considered, including Parliamentary Assistant and caseworker positions. As he approaches the end of his degree, the placement has helped him make more informed decisions about potential graduate roles.
Speaking about the importance of the experience, Tom said:
“I believe if I wish to work in Parliament, it will look positive that I have at least spent some time there. Also, I believe the proactivity required in gaining work experience is viewed positively by employers.”
Tom’s time in Westminster highlights the value of work experience in helping young people gain practical insight, clarify career ambitions, and build a strong foundation for future opportunities.
