Carmel College was delighted to welcome back former student and recently elected Member of Parliament, David Baines, who visited the college to speak with A Level Politics students.
In a compelling and personal talk, David shared insights into his journey into politics, beginning with his own time as a student at Carmel College. He reflected on how his experiences at the college helped shape his values, interests, and ambitions, ultimately inspiring him to pursue a career in public service.
David went on to describe his path from local involvement in community issues to standing for Parliament, culminating in his election as an MP in 2024. His reflections offered students a powerful example of how early passion and commitment can lead to significant impact.
Following his talk, students engaged in a lively Q&A session, asking thoughtful and challenging questions. Topics ranged from cuts to winter fuel allowances and the merits of First Past the Post versus Proportional Representation, to climate change and the future challenges posed by demographic shifts.
The visit was a fantastic opportunity for students to connect classroom learning with real-world political experience and to be inspired by someone who once sat in the same seats they do now.
We thank David for his time and generosity, and we look forward to welcoming him back in the future.
