Forty Criminology and Psychology students from Carmel College recently took part in an immersive Forensic Science Discovery Day at the University of Central Lancashire, gaining hands-on experience of real-world investigative techniques.

The visit provided students with the opportunity to step into the university’s Crime Scene Village, a specialist training environment designed to replicate realistic crime scenarios. Working alongside forensic CSI professionals, students engaged in a range of practical activities that mirrored the work of real-life investigators.

Throughout the day, students were tasked with lifting fingerprints from vehicles, collecting and analysing blood evidence from a simulated crime scene flat, and learning the scientific methods used to process and interpret forensic evidence. These activities offered valuable insight into the precision, attention to detail, and analytical thinking required in forensic science.

In addition to the practical sessions, students attended a lecture titled “An Insight to Inside”, which provided a thought-provoking exploration of life in prison and the realities of the criminal justice system. The session encouraged students to reflect on broader social, ethical, and psychological aspects of crime and punishment.

The experience offered an excellent opportunity for students to connect classroom learning with real-world applications, while also exploring potential future careers in forensic science, criminology, and related fields.
