Carmel College Politics students enjoyed an exciting and insightful visit to London on Tuesday 15 September, gaining a valuable first-hand insight into the world of British and European politics.

The day began at the European Parliament Liaison Office at Europe House in Smith Square, made possible through Carmel College’s membership of the European Parliament Ambassador School (EPAS) programme.

Students took part in a series of engaging debates, exploring some of the key challenges and opportunities currently facing the European Union. Their thoughtful contributions and enthusiasm helped create a lively and stimulating session, allowing students to put their classroom learning into practice and consider different perspectives on contemporary political issues.

The group then had the privilege of meeting former Carmel student and Member of Parliament, David Baines. David spoke about his role representing St Helens in Westminster and shared an insight into life as an MP.

Students were particularly interested to hear about his role as Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, where he acts as an important link between Downing Street and Labour MPs in the House of Commons.

David also provided students with a fascinating behind-the-scenes glimpse into the workings of national politics, including how he works closely with the Prime Minister in preparation for Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs).

Students then had the opportunity to put their own questions to David, discussing a wide range of topical issues including votes at 16, the Assisted Dying Bill and the regulation of artificial intelligence. His openness and willingness to engage with students made for an inspiring and memorable discussion.

The visit concluded with a tour of the Palace of Westminster, where students explored the historic home of UK democracy and had the opportunity to observe a live debate taking place in the House of Commons chamber.

The London visit provided an excellent opportunity for students to take their learning beyond the classroom, developing their understanding of the institutions, people and political issues that shape contemporary Britain and Europe.

It was a memorable and inspiring day for our Politics students, offering a unique insight into both the UK Parliament and the European Union, while demonstrating the value of engaging directly with the people and institutions at the heart of political life.
