Last term, twenty-four Carmel College students took part in the LCR Ignite work experience programme, a prestigious initiative led by Inovus Medical and funded by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.

This fully funded programme is designed to give 16–18-year-olds a strong introduction to careers in the Healthcare and Life Sciences sectors. As part of the wider Life Science Investment Zone initiative, LCR Ignite aims to connect young people with innovative companies working on real-world challenges through cutting-edge technology.

Over the course of the 10-week programme, students received hands-on training, expert mentorship and careers guidance from the Inovus Medical team. They developed practical, industry-relevant skills and worked through the full innovation process, helping them become ‘day one ready’ for future careers in Health and Life Sciences.

Students were split into teams and tasked with developing innovative solutions, culminating in professional presentations delivered to a panel of expert judges, including the co-founders of Inovus Medical. Our Med Tech Innovation Team was announced as the overall winner, impressing judges with their creativity, teamwork and confident presentation.

In addition to the team award, several students were recognised with Rising Star awards for their exceptional individual contributions:

The Brand and Business Rising Star award was presented to Lexi Kinsella (formerly from Broughton Hall Catholic High School), who truly shone during the presentation task. Lexi worked hard to ensure her team was well prepared, showcasing impressive creative skills alongside growing confidence.

The Medical Technology Innovation Group Rising Star award went to Henry Goulbourne (formerly from Rainford High School), who demonstrated an excellent understanding of the innovation process throughout the programme. From thoughtful contributions during ideation meetings to supporting others in his group, Henry impressed at every stage.

The Medical Technology Manufacturing Rising Star award was awarded to Salex Thomas (formerly from Liverpool College), recognised for bringing positivity and commitment to every session. His exceptional people skills, teamwork and ability to make others feel welcome had a real impact on his group.

Carmel College is incredibly proud of all students who took part in the LCR Ignite programme and grateful to everyone involved for providing such an inspiring and valuable experience.
