Throughout October, Carmel College is proud to celebrate Black History Month, recognising the achievements, contributions and stories of Black people, both past and present.

As a diverse and inclusive college community, Black History Month provides an important opportunity for us to learn from one another, celebrate different experiences and recognise the individuals who have helped shape our society.

This year, our activities will encourage students and staff to listen, learn and reflect on the contribution of Black voices and the positive change they have inspired across generations.

Inspirational Panel – 13th October

On Tuesday 13th October, students will have the opportunity to hear from a panel of inspiring Black voices and role models, who will share their experiences, achievements and insights. The event will encourage students to consider their own role in creating positive change and contributing to the Common Good.

College-Wide Creative Competition

Students and staff are also invited to get creative by entering a piece of art, poetry or creative writing inspired by Black history, culture, identity or the people who inspire them.

Nominate a Black Hero or Heroine

We are also inviting students and staff to nominate a Black hero or heroine who has made a significant contribution to society. This is an opportunity to recognise the courage, achievements and commitment of individuals who have helped make our communities and wider society a better place.

Our celebrations reflect the Catholic Social Teaching principle of Human Dignity, recognising that every person has inherent worth and deserves to be valued and respected. By celebrating different stories, experiences and contributions, we can build a community where everyone feels seen, valued and able to make a difference.

This October, we look forward to coming together as a Carmel community to celebrate, educate, inspire and amplify Black voices, recognising how each of us can contribute to a more inclusive society and work for the Common Good.
