This week, we are proud to celebrate Dyslexia Awareness Week by shining a light on what dyslexia really means and recognising the strengths, talents and perspectives that come with thinking differently.
Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty that primarily affects reading and writing, but it is about much more than literacy. It can influence the way a person processes, remembers and organises information, which can affect how they learn, take in new information, manage tasks and develop literacy skills.
However, dyslexia should never be defined by its challenges alone.
Many dyslexic people have particular strengths in areas such as reasoning, problem-solving, creativity and visual thinking. Seeing things differently can bring new ideas, fresh perspectives and innovative ways of approaching challenges.
At Carmel College, we believe it is important to create an environment where every student can understand their individual strengths and feel confident in the way they learn.
This reflects our Catholic Social Teaching principle of Human Dignity, recognising that every individual is unique, valued and deserving of respect.
This Dyslexia Awareness Week, we are celebrating difference, challenging misconceptions and recognising the incredible skills and perspectives that dyslexic people bring to our college community and beyond.
Let’s move beyond simply understanding dyslexia and celebrate the strengths that come from thinking differently.
