Carmel College produced an outstanding team performance to defeat Hull KR Academy 34–12 in the Division One Rugby Play-Off Final yesterday, securing the trophy for the third time in the last four years.

Carmel started the game strongly and established control early in the first half. Two tries from George Rankin and another from Nathan Kilgannon helped the side build an 18–6 lead at half-time, with Leo Walker successfully converting all three tries.

The second half began in equally impressive fashion, as George Rankin completed his hat-trick to extend Carmel’s advantage to 24–6.

Despite a setback midway through the half, when Carmel were reduced to 12 players following a yellow card, the team remained composed. Hull took advantage of the extra player and narrowed the scoreline to 24–12, but Carmel responded with determination and resilience.

Captain Max Fear and Cameron Holloway both crossed for further tries to secure the victory, while Leo Walker added two more conversions to complete an excellent all-round kicking performance.

The final whistle confirmed a deserved 34–12 win and another major achievement for the college’s rugby programme.

Speaking after the game, Head Coach Clive Griffiths praised the squad’s attitude and commitment throughout the match.

“This was achieved on the back of a great team performance and a never-say-die attitude from the players. They should feel very proud of their efforts. We continue to build here at Carmel and hope we have even more success in the future.”

The victory highlights the continued success and development of rugby at Carmel, with the programme continuing to compete at the highest level and produce excellent performances year after year.
