As International Women’s Day approaches this Sunday (8 March), our college community has been marking the occasion with a full week of activities celebrating the achievements, strength, and impact of women.
On 24th February, we were delighted to welcome Holly Ellis, The Scouse Scientist for an inspiring and thought‑provoking talk. Holly shared her journey and experiences, encouraging students to follow their passions and break new ground in science and beyond.
Our celebrations this week began with the creation of a beautiful Inspiration Tree, where students added the names of women who inspire them, honouring mums, grandmothers, teachers, leaders, and friends whose contributions matter every day.
Throughout the week, students took part in breast cancer fundraising and awareness activities, and the college community collected donations for the Domestic Violence Women’s Refuge. A huge thank you to all staff and students who showed such generosity in supporting this important cause.
We were also thrilled to welcome back alumna Michelle Akwara for a powerful talk about university life and what comes after education. Michelle reminded our students that passion, resilience, and hard work are the real keys to success, sharing practical tips to help them make the most of their academic and career journeys.
A big thank you to our Library Team, whose efforts created a stunning display to mark the occasion, it truly looked fantastic!
We were honoured to welcome Shana Begum, founder of St Helens the Best Me CIC, who shared her personal story and insights into domestic abuse. Shana’s visit offered real understanding of how domestic abuse can take many forms, and how education and open communication can help support safer, healthier communities. Her work truly embodies this year’s “Give to Gain” spirit, giving support so others can gain strength.
Yesterday’s International Women’s Day panel also provided a platform for thoughtful discussion on issues that affect women today. Thank you to everyone who took part, and a special thank you to Councillor Kate Groucutt for joining us and contributing to such an insightful and inspiring conversation.
It has been a week full of learning, reflection, and celebration, reminding us all of the incredible women in our lives and the power of giving support so that everyone can gain, grow, and thrive.
