A new and distinctive PGCE teacher training programme officially launched this September, delivered in partnership by Carmel College, the Catholic Teaching Alliance, and the University of Cumbria. It is already attracting aspiring teachers who want a pathway that blends academic excellence with practical classroom experience.

Unlike many traditional routes, this PGCE puts trainees at the centre of school life from day one. Trainees spend most of their time in a school or college, learning directly from experienced educators and building the skills and confidence needed to succeed in the classroom.

A PGCE designed to stand out!

What makes this programme unique is its rich blend of placements, support, and breadth of experience:

  • Hands-on experience at Carmel College, where trainees become part of a vibrant and supportive learning community.
  • A second placement in a local partner high school within the Catholic Teaching Alliance, offering valuable insight into different educational settings.
  • Teaching across both the 11–16 and 16–18 age ranges, helping trainees develop a broad and adaptable skill set.
  • Opportunities to enhance employability, with strong career support and a high demand for teachers across the region.
  • A wide choice of subject specialisms, aligned with trainees’ qualifications and professional interests.
  • Access to funding and bursaries, helping more people begin their journey into teaching.

This school-centred, experience-rich structure ensures trainees graduate feeling confident, well-prepared, and ready to make a meaningful impact in the profession.

A trainee’s perspective

Among the first cohort is Suzanne Vanezis, a current Art and Design trainee and former Carmel College student. Suzanne praised the warm, supportive environment she has experienced since starting the programme:

“I have been observing and delivering lessons in Fine Art and other areas of the art department such as the UAL Art Diploma and UAL Art Foundation. My mentor and the wider team have been so welcoming and supportive; it is a wonderful place to learn and teach. I am really looking forward to starting my career in teaching having learnt in such a great department.”

Suzanne’s comments reflect the college’s commitment to nurturing confident, passionate teachers who feel part of a strong professional community.
