Science graduate ambassadors from Newcastle University visited the college recently to deliver a series of activities for the college's science students. These activities aimed to enhance and enrich the STEM curriculum with some fun experiments.
Activities included:-
'Genes in a Bottle', An exciting practical that made DNA visible via a simple extraction and precipitation experiment. At the end of the activity students left with a necklace that contained a sample of their own DNA, a mini-me!
'Outbreak'. A scenario based activity following the aftermath of a virus release. Students assumed various roles and used their scientific knowledge to contain the epidemic. I think Carmel has a few budding Prime Ministers in the making!
'Renewable Energy Series'. An interactive activity that allowed students to build their own solar car. At the end the activity the cars had a race. One of the cars was slightly handicapped as it refused to travel in a straight line!
All activities seemed to generate a real buzz around the science area and students commented on how much they enjoyed the day.
The graduate ambassadors also delivered a presentation on 'Year 12 - Making choices and applying to University'. This was a great introduction to higher education, outlining the benefits of further study and the important decisions that have to be made. It encouraged students to start researching where they want to study and which course is right for them. It also dealt with making the transition to university, student life, student finance and how students can make the most of their money.
The presentation gave good, relevant advice and many students left feeling excited by the prospect of university.
All in all it was an excellent day which was fun and informative.
