Law Trip to the USA

The Law Trip to New York was a great success with all 22 students enjoying 5 days in the Big Apple.

Our first night in New York was taken up with a fantastic visit to the Empire State Building. The night time views over the city were breathtaking and a number of students paid the $12 extra to go up to the highest observatory on the 102nd floor.

We were able to visit the United Nations Building on the East side during our first morning in New York. After going through airport style security we were able to have a guided tour of this important building. The highlight was the General Assembly Hall were all 192 countries in the UN meet to discuss world issues. Later that day we went to so the Dakota building where John Lennon was shot and then walked through the snow covered Central Park to see the Strawberry Fields Memorial Garden. The skating rink in the Rockefeller Centre was our next stop but I think the shops on nearby 5th Avenue were more of a draw for many students.

We attended a basket ball game at the world famous Madison Square Garden in the evening but the New York Knicks failed to win the that night.

The middle of the week saw a snow storm hit the city and we were lucky to get into the Police Department Museum and the 911 Tribute Centre at Ground Zero before they shut due to the bad weather. The Tribute Centre was very moving with many students almost in tears when reading the displays and many spending time to write messages in the book of condolence. The snow fall meant that we could not see a court case this year as all of the city night courts closed but instead the students enjoyed a visit to the cinema to see films that were not out in Britain yet.

One of our students had an 18th birthday to remember on the last night when the waitress in the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square got her to stand on the chair while the whole restaurant sang happy birthday to her.

All in all it was a fantastic trip enjoyed by staff and students alike.
