English Literature and Philosophy

After leaving Carmel I went to the University of Glasgow to study English Literature and Philosophy. During the first two years at Glasgow university students study three subjects, this year I am also studying Classical Civilisations. University is a great place to learn and meet people, since starting I have joined the Skiing and Snowboarding club, the philosophical society, student volunteers abroad and of course the University union.

Carmel has been a great place to learn, meet people and has prepared me well for university. The Carmel staff are amazing and my time here has been very memorable. I also had the opportunity to participate in volunteer work with the Lasallian Developing World Project through Carmel College. I spent five weeks in Malawi, Southeast Africa in the summer of 2009, whilst there I helped to build a teachers house and finish a school block in an extremely deprived village. This year, 2010, I will be travelling to Thailand where I will be teaching English in a refuge settlement, and helping to build classrooms out of bamboo. I am very grateful for the opportunity to volunteer abroad, I wouldn’t have known about the charity if I hadn’t been at Carmel.
