We are very pleased to announce that applications are now being welcomed for the next intake of trainees for the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector Level 5 (DTLLS) due to run from September 2013*.
This teaching qualification is validated by the examination group OCR. It qualifies successful candidates to teach in the Post-16 sector. With this qualification you can apply for a position in a school or academy with 11yrs to 16yrs learners. It would be up to the Head Teacher to decide whether to call you for interview or not and ultimately appoint you to a post.
The DTLLS course will be both intense and stimulating and will contain many varied experiences. The course is delivered wholly at Carmel College and will be full-time (approximately 30 weeks) over one academic year. The Diploma comprises of one hundred hours of teaching and seventeen academic units. Each unit is assessed by both your subject mentor and the course coordinator, before being moderated by OCR. The theoretical aspects of the course will be taught in the classroom, and then put into practice teaching students. To successfully complete the course you will need to pass each unit, and to be judged competent as a classroom teacher. Obviously you will be well supported throughout your time at Carmel by both your course and subject tutors.
The initial trainee teaching course will also include the full range of educational experiences that you will need to prepare you to enter the profession. As such you will be expected to attend Open Evenings and Parents Evenings and you will have the opportunity to engage in a wide range of enrichment and support activities.
Two trainees who are attending the 2012-2013 course have provided the following comments:
“The support is brilliant, you settle much more quickly into your department, and it is all instantly available to you on site. I would recommend it unreservedly to you if you're thinking of embarking on a teaching career. It is the best decision I have ever made and one which will continue to benefit me for the rest of my life". Trainee in English Literature 2012-2013
"The course is very informative and really gives you the tools you'll need for teaching. The course is run entirely within the college, so you feel part of the community which is a fantastic aspect of the course." Trainee in Biology 2012-2013
The course is recognised by the Student Loans Company and applicants can access the relevant funding. Course fees are £6000.
